At the recent Sunday Times Best Companies event The Midcounties Co-operative, parent co-operative of Co-operative Energy, proved that co-operation is not only relevant in today’s challenging times but is also capable of being a successful business model as it picked up the prestigious Sunday Times Giving Something Back award for its commitment to colleagues, communities and members.

The fundamental aspects of co-operation that give it its unique identity, including supporting local communities, sharing profits with members and maintaining a diverse portfolio of ethical businesses designed to offer members an alternative to traditional suppliers, are all key elements in ensuring that The Midcounties Co-operative is a successful and growing modern co-operative.

Engaging and investing in its 10,000 colleagues is key to delivering results for its members and communities and therefore the Society was extremely pleased to increase its position in the Sunday Times  ‘25 Best Big Companies to Work For’ event, climbing three places to sit tenth in the list.

The Midcounties Co-operative is featuring in the coveted list for the fourth consecutive year. It also secured a prestigious two-star rating from Best Companies, the organisation running the poll, for the second year running.

The ‘25 Best Big Companies to Work For’ accreditation is awarded following a colleague feedback survey that covers areas such as leadership, personal development and wellbeing, and recognises businesses and organisations from across the UK and Northern Ireland that have high levels of employee engagement.

Ben Reid, Chief Executive of The Midcounties Co-operative, said: “At a time when the relevance of the co-operative model is being scrutinised, winning this award proves that co-operatives can more than hold their own against large corporate organisations. As an independent society with a turnover of over £1 billion this accolade shows that co-operation is clearly working for Midcounties, proving its success and securing a sustainable future for the business.

“To move up three places in the list and to be given special recognition for the community work we undertake reflects our position as a leading modern co-operative. Our 10,000 colleagues are committed to the communities they work in. We invest and support the learning and wellbeing of our colleagues, as part of our co-operative values, creating an engaged team ensuring we not only offer the greatest service to our customers but also encouraging our colleagues to want a long-term career with the Society.”
