What is the Tariff Comparison Rate (TCR)?

The Tariff Comparison Rate (TCR) is a simple straight-forward tool which lets you easily compare gas and electricity prices against other products and energy providers. It is a single figure, which takes into account the standing charge, unit rates and any discounts that go into providing a tariff’s overall price. The TCR operates in much the same way as the APR% rate does when comparing loans, credit cards and other financial products.

The TCR is calculated based on the medium energy usage of a household determined by Ofgem. The typical medium usage is currently set at 3,200 kWh of electricity and 13,500 kWh of gas a year.

In general, the TCR should only be considered as a guide, it will not determine the actual amount you pay. Your household energy usage may be higher or lower than the typical amount set by Ofgem.
