Co-operative Energy’s Response to The Big Switch

Co-operative Energy’s response to The Big Switch

You may have heard of The Big Switch, a collective switching campaign organised by the consumer body Which? and the campaigning body 38 Degrees. Which? is asking energy suppliers to bid in an auction and win the chance to supply consumers with electricity and gas at a market leading price.

We launched Co-operative Energy to bring our customers the benefits of collective buying, such as consistently lower energy prices and a greater emphasis on renewable energy. It seems that the concept of Co-operation is catching on.

We have been working with Which? to ensure their auction benefits all energy consumers, not just those who register to take part in The Big Switch.

We are pleased to say that Which? have listened to our advice. So we have today decided to take part. We want to use The Big Switch to publicise the co-operative model of collective buying.

The main reason for writing to you now is to reassure you that, in line with one of our fundamental business principles, if we become the Which? preferred supplier, you will be given at least as good a price as the one we bid in the Which? auction. New customers will not be offered a better tariff than yours.

You don’t need to take any action; we will deal with it all for you.

We are also challenging other energy suppliers to follow our lead. They should treat their existing customers fairly and not offer new customers a better deal than their loyal customers.

Finally, as a Co-operative Energy customer, you will shortly be getting a separate communication about our AGM in May, when members will be voting on a proposal to pay a Share of Profits dividend of 1.5p per £1 spent in the six months ending January 2012. Assuming that proposal is approved, payment will be made in June and of course you have the option of offsetting this against your energy account. This is collective buying in action and the benefit of being part of a co-operative.

If you have any questions about The Big Switch, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
