Gadget of the month: Memory

Posted on 30 March 2016

In the world of energy, recent years have been all about the connected home. From smart meters and thermostats to smartphone-controlled lighting and appliances, we’ve never had so much control over our consumption. That’s why we’re going to be showcasing some cutting-edge gadgets each month in our ‘gadget of the month’ feature. This month it’s the turn of an innovative handprint recognition coffee machine.

Getting the perfect coffee is a small yet significant part of many people’s every day lives. From dark roast to sweet and milky, a person’s coffee preference can make the difference between a great start to the day and an average one. So why isn’t there a coffee machine that can make your favourite coffee exactly how you want it time and time again?

Well, now there is.

Introducing Electrolux Design Lab finalist, Memory. Created by designer WenYao Cai of Guangdong Industry Technical College of China, this unqiue gadget uses handprint recognition to make the perfect cup of coffee according to personal preference. Whether you want a macchiato or a cappucino, Memory will remember every time. You tell it what you want, it scans your hand and the next time you want that exact same cup of coffee Memory is ready and waiting to serve up your very own personal cup.

When Cai was asked what the inspiration was behind his idea he answered, “The Memory is a literal, physical interpretation of the idea of accessing memories through the senses. Smell, taste and touch can transport anyone’s mind to another place by stirring up memories associated with that sense. As no two people’s memories can ever be the same so are people’s tastes in coffee. So when the user touches the Memory instead of them remembering how to make their favourite coffee the Memory does it for them.”

We can’t believe that this product doesn’t exist yet!
