How do smart meters work?
Smart meters measure how much gas and electricity you use and share this information with your energy supplier. By automatically sending regular meter readings, you can make sure you’re always receiving the most accurate bills, not ones based on estimates or manual readings.
To share your energy usage information with your supplier, smart meters use their own secure, wireless network, similar to those used by TVs and mobile phones. You don’t need an internet connection or Wi-Fi in your home for your smart meter to work.
Smart meters also give you accurate, real-time information about your gas and electricity usage. The simple, in-home display shows you exactly how much energy you’re using and what this is costing you in pounds and pence. Once you can see how much you’re using and what it’s costing you, you can start to make changes to reduce your consumption and save money on your bills.
