What does the future hold for the smart home?

Posted on 4 May 2016

Thanks to constant advancements in technology, our homes are getting smarter and smarter each day. Many of the devices we now take for granted would’ve been dismissed as science fiction five or ten years ago – who would’ve ever thought we’d have things like smart thermostats, robot vacuum cleaners and wearable technology?

Check out these 6 movie predictions that came true

So, where do we go from here? What does the future hold for the smart home?

Our homes will continue to become greener

As the desire to save energy continues to grow, smart technology will help us find new and innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Improving energy efficiency is already an area being addressed by technology, with smart meters helping us track our consumption and new, more efficient devices helping us use less energy and save money on our bills.

As technology continues to advance, becoming more affordable and available, we’ll start to see a wider uptake of ‘green’ smart home technology.

Our homes will look after our health

Wearable technology is already proving to be very popular, with devices like Fitbit helping you track your activity and encouraging you to live a healthier life. As our homes become smarter, we’ll see an increase in the number of devices and gadgets that can monitor our health and provide helpful advice – from bathroom scales tracking your fat content to smart mattresses monitoring your sleep pattern.

Our homes will listen to us

We’ve all dreamed of having our own virtual assistant, someone available to help us out with whatever we need. Smartphones have already started introducing their own personal assistants – Siri, Cortana and Google Now – which can do everything from setting reminders to telling us whether we need to take an umbrella with us as we leave the house.

More and more devices are introducing voice activation and control functionality, but imagine if your entire home had this? For example, who wouldn’t want to be able to get their home to put the kettle on, or to turn up the heating, or switch the oven on, just by asking? Just remember to ask nicely!

Who knows what sort of homes we’ll be living in 5, 10 or 15 years from now? We can’t wait to find out though!
