Why choose us?
New energy suppliers are appearing all the time, and they are all asking you to switch, so why should you choose us?
At Co-operative Energy we are different. Because being a co-operative means that you have a say in how the society is run and where the supplied energy comes from. Our aim is to be completely clear and transparent, focusing on our members, customers and long-term sustainability.
Owned and run by our members
What other energy company can say their decisions are made in your best interest? The Big 6 energy suppliers are owned by shareholders; when they make a profit, it is the shareholders who benefit, not the customers. However, when we make profit, it is you, our members, and your community who benefits.
As members, you are the owners of The Co-operative. You have a say in how the business is run, decide how much profit is shared and reinvested, as well as share any profits that we make. And, to say thank you, we reward our members twice a year with a share of the profits in proportion to how much business they do with us.
Fair and transparent
Our aim is to provide you with the fairest, most uncomplicated and transparent costs and service that we can, after all, it is what you asked for, so it is what we strive to be.
We will always offer fair prices. Many suppliers offer cut-price promotions for a limited amount of time. They invite customers to switch by offering them a great price - but it soon increases when the offer ends. At The Co-operative Energy we do things differently. We will make it as simple as possible for you to switch, and provide you with straightforward, fair and easy to understand tariffs. We aim to save you money in the long term, so much so that once you switch to The Co-operative Energy, you will never want to switch again.

We care about the world we live in
We want to ensure that the world is clean and manageable for future generations. When we purchase energy we look for the lowest carbon emissions and cleanest technology, we will also try and keep your energy usage to a minimum to help you reduce bills and your carbon footprint. To do this we ensure that that the carbon content of our electricity is less than half the national average. We believe a multi-pronged approach is needed if the UK is to meet its climate change targets in the medium term.
Values and ethics are the heart of our business
For over 165 years we have been making the world fairer for members, customers and suppliers by providing everyday services at fair prices. For us it is not about money and profits, it’s about being a responsible, ethical business that is committed to making a positive impact on climate change.
Our business is run on four values; democracy, openness equality, and social responsibility. These are derived from the values and principles of the Co-operative movement. We believe they demonstrate the strength of Co-operation and set us apart from our competitors. These elements enable us to build the worldwide Co-operative ethics of honesty, solidarity, self-responsibility, and caring for others into our daily work. We also pride ourselves in knowing that everything we do follows these values, from initial training through to dealing with members, customers and the local community.
Fairplay, Fair Tax
As a values led and ethical organisation, we believe that we should pay the taxes which are due and not engage in aggressive tax avoidance schemes, even if legal.
In the early part of 2014 Co-operative Energy became the first energy supplier to receive the Fair Tax Mark accreditation. The Fair Tax Mark is the world's first independent accreditation scheme to address the issue of responsible tax. The Midcounties Co-operative, which Co-operative Energy is part of, was one of the first businesses to receive the accreditation and was the first company to secure re-accreditation in early 2015.
Ben Reid, Midcounties CEO, stated; “We see the Fair Tax Mark as natural extension of our long-standing commitment to put something back into the communities in which we trade”. And our Fair Tax Mark certifies that we are paying the right amount of tax, in the right place, at the right time.
